Detailed introduction

Testosterone is the primary androgen in the body, mainly synthesized by Leydig cells in the testes, with small amounts secreted by the adrenal glands and ovaries in females. After secretion into the blood, 98% binds to plasma proteins, with only 2% existing in free form. In males, testosterone primarily promotes the development and growth of reproductive organs, fosters and maintains the development of male secondary sexual characteristics, and sustains the function of the prostate and seminal vesicles, as well as spermatogenesis. Testosterone also promotes protein synthesis, bone growth, and erythropoiesis. Serum testosterone levels in normal females are very low, primarily derived from the ovaries, adrenal glands, and peripheral conversion from precursors. Normal levels of androgens in females serve as substrates for estrogen. Testosterone plays an important role in maintaining normal growth and development during female puberty and regulating certain metabolic processes. Elevated testosterone levels in males may be caused by abnormalities in the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis. It can also be seen in congenital adrenal hyperplasia, benign Leydig cell tumors, hyperthyroidism, androgen resistance syndrome, and male precocious puberty. Elevated testosterone levels in females may indicate androgen syndrome, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hyperthecosis, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, ovarian tumors, adrenal tumors, adrenal hypoplasia, ovarian dysfunction, or hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis disorders.
